Maine Coon: colours

Maine Coon cats come in a wide range of colours, with brown classic tabby being the most classic colour of the breed, which makes them bear resemblance to raccoons.   Other common colours include silver tabby,  red tabby, cream, tortoiseshell etc while common patterns are mackerel tabby and classic tabby, with or without white.  For knowledge of the variety of colours and patterns, do go to Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA).

Myths and Legends

There are quite a lot of intriguing myths and legends around Maine Coon.   They are summarized as follows:

 For many years, they are believed to be the result of a cross between a raccoon and a domestic  feline.

 They are resulted from crossings between domestic or feral cats and the bobcat.

 The romantic version has it that during the French Revolution, Queen Marie Antoinette fled to Maine and off she went with 6 Angoras, which later on mated with local shorthaired cats when they had settled in the US.  Their offspring became the first generation Maine Coon.

 Captain Coon introduced a number of longhaired cats from Scandinavia during this many journeys between Maine and Europe.

 Fierce Vikings left some hardy types in Maine, which explained why Maine Coon cats bear so munch resemblance to today’s hardy types in Sweden, Norway and Russia.

Different types

I had done quite some research into the ‘types’ of Maine Coon before I actually started my contacts with breeders.   In my observation, there are two main types— a more feral looking type and a sweeter and less feral type.   After scanning loads of pictures, I decided that I am still more into the latter type.

The primary difference between the two types is with the muzzle (the mouth part).   The feral type has a far much broader muzzle than that of the sweeter type, making the male look more mature and wilder.    Experienced American breeders told me that the latter type is preferred by the CFA, which wants Maine Coons to retain the sweet looks of classic Persian.  Due to copyright problems, I can’t show you the photos of the two types here but you can click here for a study of them and decide which type you prefer.  Please note that it is generally believed that  TICA prefers a more feral looking type than the CFA.

Maine Coon: characters

 Very affectionate and highly intelligent, possessing a gentle disposition;

 Can go along with children, dogs and cats of other breeds

 Not very vocal but chirp a lot, especially when holding a conversation with their owners!

 Prefer being quiet; rather laid-back and relaxed;

 Seldom cause troubles!

 Love raising  on  haunches to view things not seen at ground level, just like a rabbit!

 Fond of head-to-head rubbing
